What Does the Constitution Mean to You?

As America celebrates its milestone 250th birthday and voters prepare for midterm elections, Heidi Schreck's What the Constitution Means to Me offers a timely, funny, and deeply personal invitation to reflect on the document that helped shape our nation—and continues to shape our lives.

Heidi Schreck's funny, heartfelt, and surprisingly intimate play begins with her experience as a 15-year-old traveling around the country competing in Constitutional debate competitions to earn money for college. From there, she takes us through four generations of women, family stories, American history, and the very personal ways the Constitution influences our lives.

It's the kind of theatre that makes audiences laugh one minute, and sit quietly thinking the next. But this is not a strictly observational production; one of the most interesting aspects is that it invites the audience to reflect and participate. There are no grand lectures, just candid storytelling, humor, and thoughtful conversation. It reminds us that the Constitution is more than a historical document or a subject of debate - it is a living part of our daily lives that continues to inform our experience of American life over generations.

As Allison Shoemaker wrote about the play for rogerebert.com, put it, "It’s a towering achievement, a work of devastating clarity. It’s also funny, compassionate, and surprising, and somehow, in spite of everything, in possession of a bright flare of optimism. To watch it is both painful and vital, like taking a great deep breath with a set of broken ribs. It will hurt. The pain is worth the reward."

As we mark the semiquincentennial of America, What the Constitution Means to Me offers an opportunity to pause, look back at our nation's history, and consider the ideals and questions that have carried us through two-and-a-half centuries.
